Aloe Lube: Endless Summer

Summer is technically drawing to a close, but you wouldn’t know it recently. It’s been bright, and hot, and in spite of taking the necessary precautions, I managed to get a wicked sunburn this week. I decided an experiment was necessary, bring on the aloe lube!

Aloe vera is a magical plant. This beautiful succulent is known for its multitude of medicinal properties, with its use dating back to the 16th century. Only recently has research been conducted on its efficacy when used externally and internally, however.*

We’ve always carried aloe-based personal lubricant at Tulip, but I have never managed to make it home with any (Sliquid H2O and Uberlube have been tied as a personal favourite for awhile, and I thought I didn’t need anything else on my shelf).
Today our aloe lubes doubled as sunburn-relief ointment, and holy wow, I was so impressed by the variety of sensations aloe lube has to offer!

Intimate Organics: Hydra
aloe-lube-intimate-organics
Slick, and cool, and gently sticky. The Hydra glides on the skin and feels great under a cool breeze. This aloe lube felt the closest in viscosity to other water-based lubes I have used in the past. 5 min spot check: still slick to the touch, although a bit had absorbed into the skin (as a good water-based lube should). The skin was slightly less painful to the touch, aided greatly by the slickness of the lube. 10 min spot check: ever so slightly slick, with no sticky residue.

Good Clean Love: Almost Naked

Between a liquid and a gel, Almost Naked has a clear, aloe-like thickness with a smooth texture. I was not prepared for this lube’s sugar-cookie-scent. I smell delicious! 5 min spot check: slightly tacky to the touch, much like a pure aloe. This aloe lube remained the most-sensitive to a cool breeze at this point, and I continued to feel sweet, sticky luxury. 10 min spot check: still fairly slick in some parts, dry and unsticky in others. I still smell like cookies.

Sliquid Organic: Natural Lubricating Silk

Opaque and thick-slick, with a pleasant, slightly earthy aroma. The Sliquid Organic Silk has a clean slipperiness to it that is comparable to some of it’s other Sliquid counterparts. 5 min spot check: Still slightly slick to the touch, but without any stickiness. 10 min spot check: absorbed into the skin, leaving a clean, soft surface.

Aloe Cadabra: Tahitian Vanilla

Opaque and gently gelatinous right out of the bottle. Aloe Cadabra glides on lightly smoothly, and has a lovely, earthy vanilla bean hint-of-a-scent. 5 min spot check: This aloe lube absorbed into the skin quickly, leaving it feeling moisturized and clean. 10 min spot check: cool, soft, silken skin.

* In some extreme cases, hepatotoxicity has been linked to the oral ingestion of aloe, (Bottenberg, Wall, Harvey, & Habib, 2007; Yang,Kim, Kim, Kim, Sohn, Choi, & Choi, 2010; Lee & Nam, 2014). No hepatotoxicity has been linked to the topical use of aloe. In addition to the suggested topical efficacy of aloe in burn relief, (Maenthaisong, Chaiyakunapruk, Niruntraporn, & Kongkaew, 2007), some research suggests that aloe may be effective in the management of genital herpes, (Syed, Afzal, Ahmad, Holt, Ahmad, & Ahmad, 1997). Sadly, no formal research has been conducted on aloe as a vaginal or anal lubricant. Please always consult with your medical provider, and remember to always include your toy use and lubricant use in your medical sexual histories!
